In a deeply troubling incident in Ohio, a father is accused of punching his 6-month-old child as he attempted to strike the child’s mother during a drunken altercation. Following this, the man allegedly attacked police officers and tried to bite them repeatedly while at the hospital, as outlined in court documents.

The arrest of 23-year-old Avery Mapes has been detailed in a probable cause statement, which describes his behavior as enraged and racially charged while he was in the hospital room. Mapes now faces several charges, including assault, child endangerment, domestic violence, obstruction, and disorderly conduct, stemming from his alleged actions.

Authorities apprehended Mapes on Thursday after he reportedly assaulted his fiancée, with whom he shares a home and a child, while under the influence of alcohol. The woman bore visible injuries, including multiple marks and bruises, evidencing the severity of the attack. The violent encounter also left their infant with notable red marks and bruises, as stated in the court documents.

Police reports detail that Mapes attempted to hit the child’s mother multiple times while she was holding the baby, resulting in the child’s injuries when he missed his intended target. Officers responding to the incident at the couple’s residence in Toledo discovered the fiancée with “bloody handprints” on the back of her hoodie, adding to the grim details of the case.

When officers arrived at the couple’s Toledo home, they found Mapes’ fiancee with “bloody handprints” on the back of her hoodie, according to cops.

“She had bruising and red marks on her forehead and upper right area,” the probable cause statement says, noting how Mapes allegedly ran at his fiancee before unleashing his attack. “It appeared as if her arm had been squeezed,” the statement adds.

After being transported to a local medical facility, Mapes was handcuffed to a bed, which he allegedly dragged around his hospital room in an attempt to assault officers. He attempted to “kick and strike” medical staff members and “continued to yell racial slurs and profanities” while at the facility, police allege.

“The defendant refused to follow commands,” court documents say.

Mapes was released on his own recognizance with an electronic monitoring device and was ordered to stay away from his fiancee and child. He is due in court on Dec. 17.
