Trump says Crockett's Senate run a 'gift' to Republicans

While traveling on Air Force One on Tuesday, President Trump weighed in on the Texas Senate race, labeling Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s (D-Texas) candidacy as a “gift to Republicans.”

“She’s not very bright, in my opinion. I doubt she stands a chance of winning,” Trump remarked to reporters during his flight to Pennsylvania for a speech. “She might secure the Democratic nomination, but from my perspective, it only benefits Republicans. I’ve observed her actions over the past couple of years and find it hard to believe she’s a politician.”

On Monday, Crockett made it official that she is challenging Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) for his seat in the upcoming election. In the Democratic primary, she will face off against Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D). Meanwhile, Cornyn will be up against State Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) in the Republican primary.

Over the past year, Crockett has gained significant attention nationally, primarily due to her vocal critiques of Trump and the Republican Party. This bold stance has not gone unnoticed by Trump, who has been critical of her. Her campaign announcement video even included audio snippets of Trump’s disparaging remarks, branding her as “low IQ.”

However, Crockett’s increasing prominence has not been devoid of controversy. Her sharp criticisms of Republicans have sparked backlash, particularly her comments about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), whom she described with unflattering terms, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R), whom she insensitively referred to using his wheelchair as “Governor Hot Wheels.”

Trump’s comments on Tuesday echoed Cornyn’s reaction upon learning Crockett was entering the race.

“Am I hiding my glee? I’ll try to wipe the smile off my face. I would say it’s a gift,” Cornyn told Semafor in an interview.
