AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. – In a recent development, a woman from Aiken County faces charges of insurance fraud leveled by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

SLED has charged 39-year-old Dearra Lashay Griffin with submitting a fraudulent insurance claim valued at $10,000 or more. The charges were officially filed on Monday.

Details from the arrest warrant reveal that Griffin allegedly submitted a false insurance claim to GEICO, claiming her 2017 Kia Sportage was stolen from Interstate 20 near Mile Marker 33 on July 9th. However, a local repair shop informed GEICO that the vehicle had been in their possession since July 6th.

The warrant further indicates that Griffin confessed to fabricating the claim during a recorded statement, attributing her actions to mechanical problems with the vehicle.

According to authorities, Griffin unlawfully obtained $15,010 from this fraudulent claim.

According to SLED, Griffin was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center, and the case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Department of Insurance.
