International visitors from over 36 nations may soon be required to share their social media activity from the past five years as part of a new entry requirement to the United States.

The initiative, proposed on Tuesday by US Customs and Border Protection, would mandate a review of social media profiles for individuals seeking electronic travel authorization. This authorization permits citizens from 42 countries to visit the US for up to 90 days without needing a visa.

This new regulation is expected to be implemented early next year, ahead of the influx of international tourists for the World Cup soccer events.

Currently, those applying through the visa waiver program need to submit their home and email addresses, phone number, and emergency contact details, along with a $40 application fee.

With the proposed changes, applicants must also provide all personal and business phone numbers used in the last five years, email addresses from the past decade, as well as the names, birth dates, birthplaces, and addresses of immediate family members.

Countries that are part of the visa waiver program include Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Qatar, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
