A frog narrowly escaping disaster, a gorilla elegantly performing a yoga move, and a fish displaying a cheeky grin—these are just a few of the delightfully absurd scenes celebrated at this year’s Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards.
This latest batch of winners highlights the animal kingdom in its most whimsical form, with photographers capturing moments that are more reminiscent of comedy sketches than traditional wildlife photography.
Selected from an impressive pool of 10,000 entries submitted from around the world, the winning images include everything from impeccably timed falls to animals in poses that appear amusingly human-like.
The judging panel had the challenging task of choosing from images featuring birds in mid-brawl, foxes seemingly caught in a dance, and a particularly disenchanted amphibian in a life-or-death struggle—each photograph more humorous than the last.
The top honor was awarded to UK photographer Mark Meth-Cohn for his hilarious image of a gorilla striking a high-kicking pose, a shot that left the judges in stitches.
But he was far from the only star, with a penguin leading a feathery parade and an orangutan with undeniable charisma also earning spots among the favourites.
Other winners included U.S. teenager Grayson Bell, whose dramatic frog showdown, ‘Baptism of an unwilling convert’ scooped both the junior category and the Reptile Amphibian and Insect award.
Meanwhile, Jenny Stock topped the aquatic category with ‘Smiley’, her brilliantly beaming fish.
Together, the winners highlight the joyful chaos of nature, reminding us that wildlife doesn’t just inspire awe, but can also be hugely comical.
