The Hill reports that Democrats celebrated a significant victory on Tuesday by securing a state House seat in a traditionally Republican district in Georgia, bolstering their momentum as they approach the upcoming midterm elections.
In a closely watched special election for Georgia’s House District 121, Democrat Eric Gisler emerged as the winner over Republican contender Mack Guest IV, as projected by Decision Desk HQ.
Gisler’s victory is a major upset, as President Trump won the district last year by 12 points, according to DDHQ. Democrats were hopeful they could score an upset after overperforming in a recent Tennessee special election. They also flipped two seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission in November, sending shockwaves through the state’s political circles.
It was the second big win for the party on Tuesday night; earlier, Democrats flipped the Miami mayor’s office, breaking GOP control for the first time in nearly three decades.
The victories will add further wind in the party’s sails as they look toward next year’s midterms, where they’re hoping that an energized voter base and a messaging emphasizing affordability will help them flip the House and potentially the Senate.
