President Donald Trump’s recent rally in Pennsylvania has sparked substantial discussion, particularly on the morning episode of The View. The co-hosts were quick to criticize his controversial comments about immigrant preferences, suggesting a preference for individuals from Norway and Sweden over those from Afghanistan and Somalia.

During his speech in Mount Pocono, PA, on Tuesday night, Trump reiterated an ethnic slur he previously denied, announcing what he called a “permanent pause on third-world migration.” He specifically mentioned countries like Afghanistan, Haiti, and Somalia, referring to them in derogatory terms.

Although Trump has denied using such language during his first presidential term, he questioned why the United States predominantly accepts immigrants from what he described as “shithole countries.” His remarks implied a preference for immigrants from Nordic nations like Norway and Sweden.

A clip of Trump’s speech was played at the beginning of The View, after which Whoopi Goldberg addressed the camera directly. She remarked, “They see you as president and they don’t want to come here,” highlighting the criticism aimed at Trump’s immigration rhetoric.

When the screen returned to the Hot Topics panel, Whoopi Goldberg looked into the camera and said, “They see you as president and they don’t want to come here.”

Speaking to Trump’s offensive rhetoric, Goldberg later added, “This is who you are, this is who you’ve always been, and this is who you are. And this is why all the people you would like to have come here are not gonna come here. Because they don’t want to be under a dictatorship, which is what you’re doing.”

Joy Behar, for her part, questioned why people would want to leave their cushy lives in Norway, where they receive “high-quality universal healthcare” and the gun laws are strong, noting that Norway only had 22 gun homicides in 2020, while the U.S. had 20,000 gun homicides that same year.

“Why would they come here?” she asked, while Sunny Hostin chimed in, “He wants certain immigrants. He wants white immigrants, he wants white Afrikaners.”

Adding to her previous point, Goldberg pointed out that other countries have warned their citizens against traveling to the United States.

“A lot of these countries that he wants to come have said, ‘America has problems. These are not countries you want to go to,’” she said. “We are now on people’s lists to avoid.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
