(The Hill) – In South Carolina, health authorities have placed at least 254 individuals under quarantine following the state’s announcement of over 20 new measles cases reported over the weekend.

As of this past Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) disclosed the emergence of 27 additional infections of this highly infectious ailment since Friday, elevating the total case count in the Upstate region outbreak to 111. A significant portion of these cases involves children who have not been vaccinated.

Among the 111 confirmed cases, health officials noted that 105 involved individuals who had not been vaccinated, while one case involved a vaccinated person. Three other cases were partially vaccinated, having received only one dose of the recommended two-dose MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, and the immunization status of two individuals remains uncertain.

The outbreak predominantly affects young individuals: 75 cases are among children aged 5 to 17, 20 involve children under the age of 5, and only 10 cases are in adults aged 18 or older. Additionally, six cases involve minors whose specific ages have not been disclosed.
