Kamron Kearney (Bexar County Sheriff’s Office).

In a disturbing case from Texas, a man has been sentenced to nearly half a century in prison for the horrific abuse of his disabled roommate. Kamron Kearney, a 28-year-old resident of San Antonio, will spend 47 years behind bars following his conviction for aggravated assault with a weapon and inflicting injury on a disabled person, according to Bexar County court records accessed by Law & Crime.

The grim details of the case emerged during Kearney’s trial, which concluded with his conviction on December 5. Court documents reveal that Kearney subjected his 36-year-old roommate to unimaginable cruelty. The woman, who is autistic and relies on disability payments for her livelihood, endured the ordeal at the hands of someone she had lived with for over a year.

The violence unfolded in October 2023, when authorities were alerted to the situation by a caregiver present in the home. The caregiver was attending to the victim when Kearney’s anger exploded over the woman urinating on herself. In a fit of rage, Kearney poured scalding hot water over her and later set her on fire twice using rubbing alcohol.

The case has drawn significant attention not only for the severe nature of the crime but also for highlighting issues related to the care and vulnerability of disabled individuals. The arrest affidavit, as reported by local CBS affiliate KENS, underscores the brutal actions that led to Kearney’s lengthy prison sentence.

Police responded to their home in October 2023 after receiving a report about Kearney’s attack from another person in the home who was taking care of the victim. The individual was bathing the woman, and Kearney became “angry with the victim for urinating on herself,” the affidavit said.

Kearney went and filled up pitchers with “scalding hot water” and poured them over the top of the shower stall that the victim was in, causing severe burns on her neck and back, according to local ABC affiliate KSAT.

After the woman was done being bathed, Kearney forced her to stand in a corner until her legs became swollen. He then poured rubbing alcohol on her and set her on fire with a match, according to the affidavit, causing severe burns to the woman’s arms.

The fire was put out, and the woman reportedly fell to the floor. Kearney proceeded to pour more rubbing alcohol on her legs, then set them ablaze.

Court records show that the San Antonio man has been charged in the past and entered pleas of no contest or guilty for a series of violent crimes, including assault with bodily injury in 2017, assault with bodily injury to a spouse in 2019, and assault with bodily injury in 2022. It’s unclear if the victim from the hot water incident was involved in any of his previous criminal cases.
