A heartbreaking incident involving a newborn occurred last year in Manhattan, where a mother brought her deceased day-old baby to a hospital. The city medical examiner’s office disclosed on Friday that the infant had been exposed to fentanyl and placed in a plastic bag.

The newborn, identified only as “John Doe” Santiago-Sanchez, succumbed to the effects of the powerful drug and his confinement in the plastic bag, according to the officials.

Authorities reported that the baby was found unconscious and unresponsive at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center on November 21, 2024.

Sources from law enforcement revealed that the mother had given birth to the child just the previous day at her residence on West 143rd Street, near Riverside Drive in Hamilton Heights.

Following the discovery, hospital staff alerted the police. After over a year of investigation, the medical examiner’s office has now determined the infant’s death to be a homicide.

No arrests had been made by Friday, and the investigation was ongoing, cops said.
