Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke was spotted enjoying a rare public appearance alongside his wife, Arlene Silver, in Los Angeles this week, just days shy of his milestone 100th birthday.

The beloved “Mary Poppins” star, who recently opened up about his thoughts on mortality, appeared in high spirits as he was wheeled around in an office chair by an assistant on December 11.

Van Dyke was seen engaging in conversation and sharing a bright smile, dressed in stylish olive-green trousers paired with a crisp white shirt.

The iconic entertainer held onto a cane for support, showcasing his signature well-groomed beard, while opting for comfortable black slip-on shoes.

Accompanying him was his dedicated wife of 13 years, Arlene, dressed in casual attire, staying close by his side.

When asked how her husband would spend his 100th birthday on December 13, Silver, 54, recently toldĀ People it was to be a quiet celebration at home.

‘He wants to be in his room watching Jeopardy! reruns with me,’ the makeup artist said, adding how thrilled she is that his big day is a ‘global celebration of him.’

‘I’m so glad he’s still with us,’ Silver added. ‘I’ve always been celebrating him now, like since 2011 when I got him on social media. It’s like a pinnacle of all that is … all these different people from different events we’ve done, [just] so cool.’

Silver initially met the legendary star backstage at an awards show in 2006 and their romance began in 2009 after the passing of his longtime partner, Michelle Triola, from lung cancer.

They wed in a private ceremony in February 2012.

Van Dyke had previously been married to Margie Willet, who died in 2007 after battling pancreatic cancer. Willet had been the mother of his four kids. They had been divorced since 1984.

But Silver remains the sugar that sweetens every day of his life.

On November 30, at this year’s Vandy High Tea – an annual, exclusive event hosted by Van Dyke, aka Vandy, Silver, family and friends at his Malibu home – he was asked by a guest what helps his ‘medicine go down,’ a famous line from a Mary Poppins tune, A Spoonful of Sugar.

Van Dyke pointed to his wife sitting next to him and said, ‘This lady right here. She makes the medicine go down,’ calling these ā€˜the best, the happiest years of my life. Thank God for her,’ as seen in Facebook footage of the event.

One of the reasons why Van Dyke is in such great shape at his age is his exercise regime.

Back in January on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Van Dyke said he goes to the gym ‘three days a week’ to stay fit.

‘Somebody said, “To what do you attribute your age and physical condition?” And I said, “I’ve always exercised.” Three days a week, we go to the gym, still. Three days a week.’

Cheers star Ted Danson, who was one of the podcast hosts, could vouch for that, having seen Van Dyke at the gym pumping weights.

‘If I got there early enough, I would see you literally work out on some weight machine,’ Danson recalled.

‘Then, almost like you were doing circuit training, you would not walk to the next machine, but dance. You literally danced to the next machine and I watched that for a couple of weeks.’

Back in May, the versatile star revealed what the ‘curse’ of living to almost 100 is during a Q&A at the Dick & Arlene Van Dyke Present Vandy Camp event.

At one point, the actor explained how both he and late friend Ed Asner had planned to do a remake of The Odd Couple before his passing in August 2021, per People.

‘That would’ve been such fun, and we lost it. I’ve lost a lot of friends,’ Van Dyke said.

Then Silver cut in to add, ‘He’s outlived everybody. That’s the curse of living to almost 100.’

In September of last year, Van Dyke won an award for outstanding variety special at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his 2023 birthday special, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic.

After receiving the award, he told reporters that he hopes to be remembered for making people laugh, according to People.

‘I hope for making people laugh for 75 years. I’ve been in the business 75 years. I can’t believe that I’m still here and performing.’

He then wittily added, ‘I’m looking for work if anybody has.’

The actor has appeared in a number of classic films over the years such as 1964’s Mary Poppins and 1968’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, plus he also starred on the sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961-1966.
