PROVIDENCE, R.I. — In the aftermath of a tragic shooting at Brown University, new details are emerging about the suspect and the incident that has shaken the campus community.
Shooting suspect may have been wearing camouflage mask
According to Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara of Providence, witnesses have reported that the suspect involved in the deadly shooting may have been wearing a gray camouflage mask. This additional detail could play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have identified the suspect as a male, possibly in his 30s. The violent act unfolded within the confines of a university classroom, a setting that has left students and faculty reeling from shock and disbelief.
Brown University President Christina Paxson has confirmed that all known victims of the shooting are students. However, she noted that details regarding the latest victim’s condition remain uncertain at this time.
Providence mayor says one other victim was injured
On a somewhat hopeful note, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has provided an update regarding the ninth victim, reassuring the public that their injuries are not life-threatening.
Student in building heard loud pops from the lobby
Emma Ferraro, a chemical engineering student, was in the Barus & Holley lobby working on a final project when she heard loud pops coming from the eastern side of the building. For a moment, everyone turned their heads and stood still, she recalled.
Once Ferraro processed that they were gunshots, she darted for the door and ran for a nearby building where she has been sheltering for a couple hours.
She said over text that she’s eagerly awaiting updates and nervous to learn details about the injuries. She can hear helicopters flying overhead and emergency vehicles nearby.
Suspect was dressed in black
The suspect in the deadly Brown University shooting is a man who was dressed in black and last seen leaving the engineering building, according to Timothy O’Hara, Providence, Rhode Island, deputy chief of police.
.The mayor said a person preliminarily thought to be involved was detained but was later determined to have no involvement.
Brown University shooting happened during final exams
Brown University Provost Frank Doyle said final exams were taking place in the engineering building Saturday afternoon when a shooter opened fire, killing two and critically injuring eight.
Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor Brett Smiley asked for prayers for the families of the victims, noting the coming Christmas holiday. “It’s going to be a difficult rest of the day, difficult days and months ahead as this community heals,” the mayor said.
The mayor declined to say whether the victims were students.
Rhode Island governor: ‘The unthinkable has happened’
Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said “the unthinkable has happened” following a shooting Saturday at Brown University that left two dead and eight critically wounded.
McKee said his office has been in touch with the White House.

Two people were killed and eight are in critical but stable condition following a shooting at Brown university, the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, said.
Mayor Brett Smiley said those are the only known injuries and casualties.
The mayor said a shooter is not in custody. A shelter-in-place is in effect for the greater Brown University area.

University officials initially told students and staff that a suspect was in custody, before later saying that was not the case and that police were still searching for a suspect or suspects, according to alerts issued through Brown’s emergency notification system.
