In the historic city of Savannah, Georgia, the community is grappling with shock and concern following a brutal acid attack that occurred last Wednesday. Residents gathered over the weekend to express their feelings and share their fears in the aftermath of this harrowing incident.

The attack took place near the picturesque Forsyth Park, where a woman, Ashley Wasielewski, became the victim of an unprovoked assault. She was doused with acid by an unidentified man, leading to severe injuries. In critical condition, Ashley was quickly transported to the Augusta Burn Center, where she now faces a long and painful recovery process.

Ashley’s son, Wesley, provided an update on her condition, revealing that she will require skin grafts and is expected to remain hospitalized for at least a week. Wesley described the ordeal as deeply traumatizing, a sentiment that resonates with the entire community.

Among the concerned locals is Jackson Nagel, who often visits Forsyth Park to engage in leisurely activities such as volleyball, walking, and dining. The news of the attack, shared by his fiancé, left him in disbelief. Now, like many others, Jackson finds himself more vigilant and cautious when visiting the park.

He said he is now on high alert.

“You know, we were walking through the park yesterday, and I had to keep my eye out. You know, you don’t know who exactly it was. I don’t think they’ve caught the guy yet.  So you’re really just you’re looking out at anybody who’s got maybe a cup,” said Nagel. “This is scary. You know, my fiancé… she goes and feeds the cat sometimes, and she’s not going at night anymore because who knows what’s going to happen now? It’s terrifying.”

Another Savannah Local, Joe King, has been selling produce at the Forsyth Farmers’ Market for the past 15 years. He said this could’ve been done to anyone, and he’s grateful it wasn’t his own.

“You know, it could have been one of my daughters, my wife or any lady. You know, regardless of who it was, my heart goes out to them,” said King.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Wasielewski to support her recovery.
