In 2022, the much-anticipated Spy x Family burger debuted in Japan, captivating fans with its connection to the beloved anime series. This culinary creation, inspired by one of the show’s iconic characters, has now made its way to the United States. A renowned burger joint based in Texas has incorporated this distinctive sandwich into their menu, providing American anime enthusiasts with the opportunity to savor it firsthand.
According to Anime News Network, Trill Burgers has teamed up with Spy x Family to introduce an anime-themed burger and exclusive joint merchandise. Staying true to their renowned “smashburgers,” the Spy x Family burger comprises two succulent beef patties smashed on the griddle to achieve a flavorful caramelized crust. It is generously topped with American cheese, crisp pickles, tangy sour cream, and rich beef stew, crowned with a perfectly cooked sunny-side egg. Starting Saturday, Dec. 13, fans can indulge in this creation at Trill Burgers’ locations on Shepherd and Louetta. The collaboration, promoted by co-founders Bun B and Andy Nguyen via an engaging Instagram video, has already generated excitement among fans.
The inspiration for the Spy x Family burger traces back to the anime series itself, drawing from a southern stew prepared by the character Yor Forger. In a memorable episode, Yor attempts to recreate her mother’s cherished beef stew for her brother Yuri and herself, only for her limited culinary prowess to turn the meal into a challenge for Loid and Anya, who bravely endure the dish to avoid hurting her feelings.
Spy x Family’s Iconic Hamburger Makes U.S. Debut
The concept of the Spy x Family burger is directly inspired by the southern stew created by Yor Forger in the anime series. In one episode, Yor recalls the beef stew her mother made for herself and her brother, Yuri, when they were children and tries to recreate it herself. Unfortunately, her poor cooking skills turn the situation into an ordeal for Loid and Anya, who force themselves to eat the strange concoction to spare her feelings.
In addition to the burger, Spy x Family fans will also be able to choose between two Spy x Family-themed tees exclusive to the collaboration. As shown above, the back design features Anya, Loid, Yor and the family dog, Bond. The front of both tees is adorned with the Trill Burgers and Spy x Family logos. According to Bun B, the shirts are available in “tan” and an “off-black, greyish” color. “This collab is a huge deal for Trill Burgers,” he commented in a recent press release. “Spy x Family is a global show, and we’re proud to bring this unique experience to fans.”
The Spy x Family franchise started with Tatsuya Endo’s titular manga series, which launched on Shueisha’s digital comic platform, Shonen Jump+, in March 2019. A blend of action, comedy and wholesome familial vibes, the daily misadventures of an elite spy, an adept assassin and a telepathic five-year-old have charmed millions of readers worldwide. Cloverworks (The Promised Neverland) and Wit Studio (Attack on Titan) released Season one of the anime adaptation in April 2022. Three years later, Spy x Family is now one of Shonen Jump’s most popular modern IPs. Notably, the franchise’s first theatrical entry, Spy x Family: Code WHITE (2023), has grossed over $54 million at the global box office. The anime is currently in the middle of its third season, which is expected to conclude its broadcast run later this month.
Depending on the viewer’s geographical location, Spy x Family is available to stream on Hulu, Crunchyroll or HBO Max. Tatsuya Endo’s original Spy x Family manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
