Renowned General Hospital actor Anthony Geary has passed away at the age of 78 due to complications following surgery. The acclaimed star, who won eight Daytime Emmy Awards, died on December 14 after undergoing an operation in Amsterdam, where he had resided since 2015. TV Insider was the first to report the news of his passing.

In a heartfelt statement, Geary’s spouse, Claudio Gama, expressed the profound loss felt by family and friends. “It came as a shock to me, our families, and our friends. Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband for over 30 years,” Gama shared with the publication. Anthony Geary is best remembered for his iconic role as Luke Spencer, a character he portrayed for four decades on General Hospital.

Fans and colleagues have taken to social media to honor the beloved actor. One admirer posted on X, “This is truly heartbreaking. I remember watching General Hospital and the phenomenal wedding episode. My prayers go out to his family. God bless you, Anthony. Thank you for everything you’ve done for us.”

Another expressed their sorrow, writing, “There’s been so much loss this weekend, and Anthony’s passing is just too much. May his family and friends find peace. Thank you, Anthony, for sharing your remarkable talent with us; you will be dearly missed.”

Messages of condolence continue to pour in, with one fan stating, “This truly breaks my heart. We have lost a legend. RIP Mr. Geary.” Another added, “It feels like one heartbreak after another. Rest in peace, Tony. You brought immense joy into our lives with your talent. Such a tremendous loss. Damn you, 2025!”

Anthony was born in a small town in Utah and moved to LA when he was in his early twenties to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor.

He bagged steady television roles in the 1970s in shows such as The Mod Squad, All in the Family and The Partridge Family.

Anthony made his General Hospital debut on November 20, 1978, after reluctantly signing a 13-week contract at a time when he admitted publicly that he “hated soaps”.

However, he was a massive hit with fans thanks to his chemistry with Genie Francis, who played Laura Webber, and remained on the show for decades, during which he collected several awards over the years for his acting prowess.

The actor eventually left the soap opera in 2017 after appearing in an astonishing 1,995 episodes.
