Hanukkah events and vigils were held across Australia on Monday night as thousands of mourners laid flowers and left messages to remember the 15 people killed in the terror attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday.

In a poignant gathering at Bondi Beach, Rabbi Yossi Shuchat kindled the flames of a towering five-foot-high menorah. As the candles flickered against the night, he shared a message of hope with the assembled crowd: “Lightness will always persevere, darkness cannot continue where there is light.”

The ceremony, filled with a sense of unity and resilience, was a powerful moment of reflection and community. As Rabbi Shuchat illuminated the menorah, his words resonated deeply, offering comfort and strength to those present.

Meanwhile, in Melbourne, the Pillars of Light Festival brought people together at Federation Square for a similar occasion of singing, prayer, and menorah lighting. Rabbi Gabi Kaltmann led the event, creating a space for togetherness and shared purpose.

During his address, Rabbi Kaltmann expressed gratitude to everyone who attended, acknowledging their presence as a powerful act of solidarity. “Thank you for showing up and being here in solidarity,” he said, underscoring the importance of community support during challenging times.

“We gather not in fear, but in strength,” he said.

In Sydney’s east, hundreds of people attended a prayer vigil at the Chabad Bondi synagogue, the place of worship for many of those caught up in Sunday’s attack, while Members of the Jewish community gathered to celebrate the second night of Hanukkah at St Kilda beach and Caulfield Shule in Melbourne’s southeast.
