At Archer Park in Bondi, ten-year-old Matilda spent a joyful day having her face painted, getting to know some farm animals, and tenderly playing with her six-year-old sister, Summer, on the grassy fields. The sisters shared a moment filled with innocent fun and laughter.

Tragically, the joy captured in those carefree moments was shattered shortly after. Matilda was fatally shot in front of her younger sister, an event that left an indelible mark on her family and the community.

Despite being rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment, Matilda’s life could not be saved, leaving her family and loved ones in profound grief.

In a poignant tribute, Matilda’s family released a final video of their cherished daughter and niece, remembering her radiant smile that will forever illuminate their memories of her.

Her aunt, Lina Chernykh, expressed the deep sorrow that has engulfed the family, acknowledging that their lives will never be the same as they grapple with this unimaginable loss.

“A happy kid,” she told 9News.

“She was open-hearted. Everywhere she goes, she was like a sun.”

Matilda has been remembered as a “bright, joyful, and spirited child who brought light to everyone around her”, according to her language teacher Irina Goodhew.

“Yesterday, while celebrating Hanukkah, her young life was tragically taken. Her memory will live on in our hearts,” she wrote on the fundraising site.

The family gave Nine permission to share Matilda’s image and the footage.
