In a shocking turn of events in North Carolina, a man has been apprehended following a dramatic sequence of crimes, including the hijacking of an ambulance and a subsequent fatal shooting. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Cheyenne D. Woods, is now facing a slew of felony charges related to the incident that unfolded on December 13th.

The ordeal began when emergency services were called to Maxton, N.C., to address a medical emergency. According to a statement from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, what started as a routine ambulance ride quickly escalated into chaos. En route to the hospital, Woods allegedly pulled out a firearm, threatening the two EMS workers on board, and forcibly took control of the vehicle.

The hijacking led to a devastating collision with another car. In the wake of the crash, Woods reportedly left the ambulance, approached the other vehicle involved, and fatally shot its driver, identified as 74-year-old Marie Locklear, also from Red Springs.

The series of events have left the community in shock, as authorities work to piece together the details of this tragic incident. Records from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office confirm Woods’ arrest and ongoing legal proceedings as he faces serious charges for his actions that December day.

“After taking the EMS vehicle, Woods was involved in a collision with another vehicle,” the release continued. “Following the crash, Woods exited the ambulance, approached the other vehicle, and shot Marie Locklear, 74, of Red Springs.”

Locklear was transported for medical attention but ultimately died from her injuries, authorities shared.

Woods was arrested and booked on charges of first-degree murder, discharging a weapon into occupied property, robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a stolen firearm, according to the sheriff’s office.

Later that day, law enforcement announced additional felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping, and malicious conduct of a prisoner by throwing, emitting or projecting bodily fluids.

Woods is being held in the Robeson County Detention Center without bond, according to the news release. It’s unclear if he has retained an attorney who may speak on his behalf.

“This is yet another senseless act of murder committed by a repeat violent felon whose criminal history includes a prior murder conviction,” Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins shared in a statement. “The facts of this case are deeply disturbing. The suspect was armed, requested medical assistance, stole an ambulance, crashed it, and then opened fire on an innocent elderly woman without provocation.”

Law enforcement’s investigation into the incident is ongoing.
