MIAMI – In a tragic discovery on Sunday morning, authorities confirmed that a woman’s body was found inside a freezer at a Dollar Tree store in Miami.

The incident came to light when an employee at the store, situated at 968 SW Eighth St., reported the finding around 8 a.m., according to News 6’s partner, WPLG-TV.

By Sunday afternoon, police had identified the deceased as 32-year-old Massiell Garay Sanchez.

Investigations revealed that Garay Sanchez had entered the store on her own the previous evening but did not purchase anything before her death.

Authorities suspect that she accessed a restricted area meant for employees only, where the freezer is located, and remained there overnight. Her lifeless body was discovered by employees returning to work the next morning.

Investigators believe she made her way to a restricted employee-only area, where the freezer is located, and remained there overnight. Her body was found unresponsive by employees who returned to the area the following morning.

Police have confirmed that Garay Sanchez was not an employee of the store. According to a GoFundMe page set up to transport her body back to her home country of Nicaragua, Garay Sanchez was an anesthesiologist and a mother of two children.

Officers say the circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation, though they have ruled out foul play, stating that she was not forced into the freezer.

Customers at the store expressed shock upon learning of the incident.

“It’s something painful, a family heartbroken now because of the death of a person, and we don’t know what truly happened,” said customer Gerardo Nunez.

Family members of Garay Sanchez were seen outside the store waiting for answers as detectives continued their investigation. A van from the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office arrived to remove the body for further investigation.

The store, which was scheduled to open at 8 a.m., remained closed for a portion of Sunday morning while police conducted their investigation. It reopened to customers around 1 p.m., after police cleared the scene.

Miami police have said they are speaking with Garay Sanchez’s family as they continue to investigate the circumstances leading to her death.

Authorities are also looking into whether she may have been dealing with any personal or mental health issues.

The death is currently being treated as an unclassified death, and authorities have not released further details at this time.

Local 10 News reached out to Dollar Tree for a statement, which they provided:

“We are aware of this tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the individual’s family and loved ones. We are cooperating fully with the authorities at this time.”
