Authorities have launched a homicide investigation following the fatal shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) lab director and professor at his residence in Brookline.

Nuno F.G. Loureiro, aged 47, was rushed to a nearby hospital on Monday night after Brookline Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at his home. He was suffering from clear gunshot injuries, as detailed by the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.

The district attorney’s office later confirmed that Loureiro succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on Tuesday morning.

According to officials, Loureiro was an esteemed member of the MIT faculty, serving in the departments of Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics. He also held the position of Director at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.

MIT’s communications office said Loureiro was a current MIT faculty member in the departments of Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics, as well as the Director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.

“Our deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving,” MIT spokesperson Kimberly Allen wrote in a statement to Fox News. “Focused outreach and conversations are taking place within our community to offer care and support for those who knew Prof. Loureiro, and a message will be shared with our wider community.”
