Tom Silvagni, the son of high-profile former AFL star Stephen Silvagni, has been sentenced to six years and two months in jail after being found guilty of two counts of rape.

This morning in Victoria’s County Court, 23-year-old Silvagni received a sentence with a non-parole period of three years and three months.

Silvagni has already completed 12 days in pre-sentence detention.

During the sentencing, Judge Gregory Lyon highlighted the “psychological and emotional trauma” suffered by Silvagni’s victim.

Judge Lyon also considered Silvagni’s struggles with major depressive disorder before and after his conviction.

The judge acknowledged Silvagni’s strong potential for rehabilitation but remarked on his lack of demonstrated remorse.

Judge Lyon’s sentencing remarks went on to point out Silvagni had the support of a “good, pro-social family”.

The maximum jail term for rape is 25 years.

At a pre-sentence hearing last week, barrister David Hallowes SC argued Silvagni should be handed a lighter sentence because he was a young man whose time in custody would be more difficult.

The son of AFL great Stephen Silvagni and television personality Jo Silvagni was found guilty of two counts of rape on December 5 following a two-week trial in the Victorian County Court.
