On Tuesday, the Champaign Meijer became the lively setting for the yearly Shop with a Cop event, where holiday cheer was in full swing.

In a festive atmosphere, 100 children joined forces with 20 police officers to select toys, games, and clothing, bringing smiles and warmth to the holiday season. Families participating in this cherished tradition are nominated annually, ensuring that deserving kids can experience the joy of shopping for gifts.

In related community news, Springfield saw a momentous occasion as 53 individuals were sworn in as U.S. citizens, marking a new chapter in their lives.

100 kids and 20 officers got the opportunity to shop for the holidays. The kids were able to pick out toys, games and clothes. Each year families get nominated to take part in the event.

The money is raised from celebrations and events held throughout the year. Organizers said they love to see all the smiling kids and police officers too.

“There are so many volunteers here, 100 kids and the smiles, and the help, you know because –listen — a lot of people have it rough. And this is such a good thing happening,” organizer Michael Namoff said.

Organizers said this event helps changes the way people see law enforcement officers by showing kids a positive experience with them.
