In Tampa, Florida, former Tampa Bay Rays Manager and World Series winner Joe Maddon gathered a star-studded crowd, including celebrities, former athletes, and philanthropists, on Wednesday night. The occasion was his annual “Thanksmas” event, organized in partnership with the Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP), aimed at raising funds for the homeless.

“This isn’t just about people unwilling to work,” Maddon explained. “The issue is complex, involving families, children, veterans, and a diverse range of individuals. There are many symbolic gestures, but the most crucial action is acknowledging these individuals, affirming that they are not invisible to us. We are committed to assisting them in any way possible.”

The evening featured a charity dinner and an auction of sports memorabilia, including a Wade Boggs autographed bat and several jerseys.

The CEO of the Homeless Empowerment Program, Ashley Lowry, shared, “Our mission is to help the individuals, families, and veterans we serve break the cycle of homelessness permanently. While we provide meals and shelter, our primary goal is to offer comprehensive support services to help them regain self-sufficiency.”

Event proceeds will be dedicated to offering essential resources to Tampa Bay residents, particularly as the holiday season approaches. Donations will support various resource programs.

“We want to illustrate that these folks need our help. Not just on a Thanksgiving or a Christmas. Any day of the year,” Maddon said.
