In the serene setting of Port Orange, Florida, a heartwarming scene unfolded as Army veteran Eric Trinidad and his wife, Ariana, celebrated a significant milestone. The couple, surrounded by well-wishers, joyously cut the ribbon on their brand-new home, a gift that marks a new chapter in their lives.

This mortgage-free house was generously provided by Homes For Our Troops, a dedicated nonprofit organization. Their mission is to build and donate specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans who served post-9/11, offering them a life-changing foundation for the future.

Eric Trinidad’s story is one of resilience and courage. During his service in Afghanistan, he suffered a traumatic brain injury that resulted in near-total blindness. For Trinidad, this new home represents far more than just a physical dwelling—it is a symbol of independence and hope.

“Returning to civilian life can be daunting, filled with uncertainties and the challenge of relying on others,” Trinidad shared. “This house is more than a blessing; it teaches me the importance of asking for help, something that’s been a journey in itself.”

Their story is a testament to the power of community and the profound impact of support for those who have sacrificed so much. As the Trinidads step into their future, the cheers from their neighborhood echo the gratitude and pride felt by many.

The Port Orange home is unlike any other in the area. It includes more than 40 accessibility features designed to help Trinidad live independently, including voice-activated technology, wave-to-open doors and tactile safety bumps at the end of the driveway to alert him when he reaches the sidewalk.

Homes For Our Troops President and CEO Tom Landwermeyer said the organization has now built 428 homes nationwide, but its mission remains the same.

“They went to war and sacrificed for our freedom and independence,” Landwermeyer said. “When you depend on somebody, you’re no longer independent. All they want is to be as normal as anybody else — to be a good parent, a good spouse, and a value-added member of the family.”

The program allows veterans to choose where they want to live, something Trinidad said made Port Orange the right fit.

“I love Port Orange. I’m here every day,” he said. “Knowing I’ll be welcome in this community, that peace of mind is priceless and bigger than any house.”

For Trinidad, the new home is not just about rebuilding his future, it’s about reclaiming his independence.
