The escalating Powerball jackpot is now part of an elite group of monumental lottery prizes in U.S. history.
WASHINGTON — The Powerball jackpot is surging to unprecedented levels, now estimated at $1.60 billion, following the lack of a winner in the December 20 draw. This staggering amount ranks among the top five largest jackpots in U.S. lottery history. If someone secures a winning ticket with all six numbers, they stand to receive a cash payout of approximately $735.3 million.
This monumental jackpot crowns an exceptional year for the lottery. In 2025 alone, Powerball has witnessed three significant wins: a colossal $1.8 billion prize claimed in September, a $526.5 million victory in California in March, and a $328.5 million jackpot won in Oregon in January.
The current jackpot represents a unique milestone for the game, marking only the second occurrence in Powerball history where consecutive jackpots have surpassed the $1 billion mark. The previous instance occurred in 2023 with a $1.08 billion jackpot in July, followed by a $1.765 billion prize in October. The jackpot has been accumulating since September 6, when the odds-defying luck of two winners came into play, standing at 1 in 292.2 million.
With the upcoming draw, this jackpot is now documented as the fourth-largest in the history of Powerball and the fifth-largest across all U.S. lotteries, as per official lottery records.
