Veteran WEIU-TV Director Concludes Her Final Broadcast Production

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Kelly Goodwin is celebrating a significant milestone this year as she wraps up her 25th year serving as the News Director at WEIU, located on Eastern Illinois University’s campus.

Throughout her tenure, Goodwin has been instrumental in helping countless students embark on successful careers in broadcast journalism.

Her career in television news began in the 1990s, and she has gained comprehensive experience by working in nearly every role, from behind the scenes to appearing in front of the camera. When the opportunity to become the News Director at WEIU arose, she embraced it as a chance to impart her extensive knowledge while continuing her passion for storytelling.

“The experience has been incredibly fulfilling in so many ways,” Goodwin shared. “The friendships I’ve formed along the journey have been particularly special.”

Goodwin was an EIU student when she was inspired to pursue a career in broadcast journalism.
After spending time as a reporter and anchor, she came back to Charleston to fill the role of News Director at the campus tv station.

The student-run “News Watch,” The station’s daily news program, is where she’s mentored hundreds of students over the last 25 years.

“Some go into public relations writing, newspaper, radio, corporations, they start their own businesses,” Goodwin said.

Blake Wood was a student early on in Goodwin’s career at WEIU. He got a job as a reporter at WCIA 3, and he later moved to public relations at U of I Springfield, where he still uses the tools he learned from his mentor.

“She, you know, gave me a lot,” Wood said. “And when it comes to my ethical background and hard work, all those different qualities that are good to have as a journalist.”

WEIU alum Abbie Black has had a long career, from WCIA 3 to CBS-8 in San Diego. She said Goodwin could be stern at times, but it’s her big personality that inspires other students.

“When Kelly walked in the door, it’s like she has this, like, infectious smile, right? And her laugh,” Black said. “And so, you knew you connected with her, you know, personally.”

The news has always been a top priority for Goodwin, but it’s her love for the students she’s seen grow over the years that made it so special.

“I see where they start and I see where they end,” Goodwin said. “And I’ve seen that for 25 years. And it’s so glorifying, you know, I mean, it’s wonderful.”

Her last day directing and producing was Friday.

Goodwin has not only helped students learn the in-and-outs of reporting, but has also seen many of those students rack up hundreds of awards. Goodwin was just recognized herself, becoming a Silver Circle Honoree for her contributions to TV news.
