Today, an announcement was made indicating that “specialist” officers would receive enhanced weaponry for the upcoming test match, scheduled from December 26 to December 30.

Victoria Police emphasized that this action is purely precautionary and not triggered by any newly identified threats.

Chief Commissioner Mike Bush explained, “This is a proactive, precautionary step aligned with the current threat landscape.”

He added, “Although it may be unusual to see officers with these arms at the MCG, our primary aim is to ensure heightened security and reassure the public.”

It comes just a week after the Bondi terror attack, which left 15 people dead in Sydney, where police armed with only pistols were forced to confront gunmen with more powerful weapons.

Both Cricket Australia and the Melbourne Cricket Club have expressed their support for these measures.

It has been confirmed the semi-automatic rifles the officers will carry are already part of their regular tactical equipment.

There will also be extra patrols in and around the MCG, including at nearby train stations.

Around 75,000 people are expected to attend day one on Boxing Day, and officials believe around 373,000 people may attend over the five days of the test match.
