A Russian general lost his life on Monday morning when an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle in southern Moscow, according to investigators.
The incident claimed the life of Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who was the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff. This information was confirmed by Svetlana Petrenko, the official spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee.
“Investigators are exploring multiple avenues in the investigation of the murder. One potential lead is that the crime may have been orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko stated.
Russian media reported that the explosion occurred around 7 a.m. in a parking lot on Yaseneva Street in Moscow, with the driver present inside the car at the time of the detonation.
In a related incident, Ukraine’s security service previously took responsibility for a similar attack on a senior Russian military official in December 2024. During that attack, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of the military’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed when a bomb hidden on an electric scooter exploded outside his apartment building, just a day after Kyiv filed criminal charges against him.
His assistant, Ilya Polikarpov, was also killed.
