The iconic RX-78-2 Gundam, which first appeared in the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime, has been a source of inspiration for countless mecha across the franchise. Among these is the seventh entry in its giant robot series, which is now being celebrated with an impressive new toy release.
Originating from the Mobile Suit Gundam: Battlefield Record UC0081 video game, the Gundam Unit 7 is a clear successor to the RX-78-2. While this mobile suit might not be the most well-known, it is being reimagined as the HGUC 1/144 Gundam Unit 7 [G07] model kit. This model includes several recognizable features and is an essential addition for collectors, highlighting the progression of Gundam design.
Piloted by Captain Hugues Courand, the Gundam Unit 7 shares its series with the legendary RX-78-2 Gundam. The two mecha bear a strong resemblance, differentiated mainly by subtle color variations. Although classified as a High Grade kit rather than the more intricate Master Grade, the Gundam Unit 7 is rich in detail, skillfully transforming the digital mecha from the video game into a tangible, plastic reality.
A Bandai Video Game Mecha Gets Reborn as New Gundam High Grade Model Kit
Piloted by Captain Hugues Courand, the Gundam Unit 7 is in the same series that also includes the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam. The resemblance between these two mecha is apparent, with the Unit 7 having only slightly different colors. While it’s merely a High Grade kit and not a more advanced Master Grade, the Gundam Unit 7 has a plethora of detail and perfectly brings the mecha from the mobile game to life in plastic form.
This includes a high range of articulation, with each pose showcasing the inner mechanical frame of the model kit. Furthering the resemblance to the RX-78-2 would be the weapons and accessories, with these being the typical armaments that most would expect from more “basic” mobile suits.
The Gundam Unit 7 has two Beam Sabers, as well as a Beam Rifle and a shield. The latter is a more washed-out gray color, however, differentiating it from the brighter look of the RX-78-2’s shield. There are also four hands total packaged with the High Grade model kit, with these being interchangeable to hold certain weapons. Other visual elements include the rear-mounted verniers on the back, furthering just how detailed the High Grade kit is.
The HGUC 1/144 Gundam Unit 7 [G07] Gunpla is being released in December 2025 in Japan (with a planned “third batch” release in April 2026), and in February in the U.S. for US$27. Mobile Suit Gundam: Battlefield Record UC0081 was released years ago on the Sony PlayStation 3, but the title was only available in Japan (and the same went for the later manga adaptations of the story). Thus, the release of this new model kit finally makes a piece of obscure lore available for international fans.
