AUGUSTA, Ga – A new chapter is unfolding for a landmark in Augusta’s historic downtown. The Augusta Canal Authority has finalized the sale of the Sibley Mill, marking a significant step in its transformation.
Built in 1882, this former textile mill is steeped in history and is now poised for a revitalization. Crossgate Partners, an Atlanta-based development firm with a track record of successful projects, including the renovation of King Mill, has acquired the property for $2 million.
Plans for Sibley Mill include a comprehensive renovation that will convert the historic structure into 215 market-rate apartments. The development will feature modern amenities such as a swimming pool and a gym, enhancing the living experience while preserving the mill’s historic essence.
Russ Gambill, the interim director of the Canal Authority, expressed optimism about the project, emphasizing that this development will breathe new life into the storied mill, seamlessly blending the old with the new.
The Canal Authority’s interim director, Russ Gambill, said this will give the historic mill new life.
“It’s on a historical register of historic places. And people want to live in that kind of environment where something old has been renovated to make new again. You know, this company does a fantastic job. They’re experienced in renovating old textile mills,” he explained.
The Canal Authority kept ownership of the hydroelectric plant on the property and will continue to use it to generate power.
Construction is expected to start at the beginning of next year and take about a year to complete.
