Among the numerous John Hughes-inspired films, Christmas Vacation captures the essence of the holiday season for countless families—at least in years other than 2020. With its depiction of bickering relatives, confined spaces, financial strains, tree mishaps, and the inevitable tension, the film resonates with many. Whether you’re chuckling at a squirrel causing chaos or empathizing with Clark Griswold’s chainsaw antics, the film strikes a chord. Moreover, Julia Louis-Dreyfus shines in her role as the snobbish neighbor, even before her iconic Seinfeld fame. However, much like Elf, A Christmas Story, and Home Alone, it’s tempting to reduce Christmas Vacation to its comedic highlights immortalized as Hallmark ornaments. Yet, Hallmark hasn’t captured the film’s most poignant scene: Clark, stranded in the attic, clad in an old coat, tearfully watching home movies, his laughter mingling with tears. It’s a moment that encapsulates the nostalgia, the heartache, and the perennial quest to recreate cherished memories for future generations. That’s the true spirit of Christmas.
