South Carolinians react to unusual warm temperatures on Christmas Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – In a surprising twist, Christmas Day in South Carolina felt more like a summer afternoon as temperatures soared into the upper 70s. The unseasonably warm weather set new records and caught residents off guard, many of whom were anticipating a more typical winter holiday experience.

South Carolina meteorologists have noted that this year’s Christmas temperatures rank among the warmest ever recorded. Instead of bundling up in winter gear, people donned short sleeves to enjoy the sunshine and engage in outdoor pastimes.

Throughout the region, residents took advantage of the unexpected warmth by walking their dogs, jogging, and socializing with family and friends in the open air. However, the balmy conditions did present an unforeseen challenge for some.

One local family found themselves outdoors more than planned after Santa delivered a new bicycle to their daughter, unaware of how warm the day would be.

“We’re thrilled to be outside, though maybe not quite dressed for 80-degree weather as elves,” shared Carolyn Vaught, a resident of South Carolina. “Nonetheless, we’re having a great time.”

John Campbell added that the heat made traditional holiday attire uncomfortable, noting, “Not very breathable cotton going on right now.”

Despite the temperatures, many residents said they were still able to keep Christmas traditions alive. Some even turned on their fireplaces for ambiance, opening doors to balance the warmth.

Others said the heat forced them to take breaks while walking or exercising outdoors.

“I should’ve worn a sleeveless top,” said Tina Ketner of South Carolina. “It’s very warm walking, but I’m getting a little exercise in today.”

While some described the weather as unusually warm, many agreed they preferred it to cold and wet conditions.

Meteorologists say cooler temperatures are expected to return next week. Until then, they encourage residents to enjoy the mild weather while it lasts.
