COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — As January approaches, several new laws are set to come into effect in Georgia. WRBL News 3 has spotlighted a few that residents should be aware of.

PARKING

Georgia motorists might need to pay closer attention to where they park. A newly enacted law empowers private property owners to apply boots to vehicles trespassing on their premises, provided that local jurisdictions permit this action. Property owners are required to display warning notices.

SAVINGS

Though having your car booted might be inconvenient, another new law aims to help individuals prepare for emergencies of a different nature.

Starting in January, all Georgia taxpayers will be allowed to create a catastrophe savings account. Accounts are limited to one per person but allow saving in preparation for disaster-related losses.

A FEW OTHER LAWS…

Georgia residents should be aware that the State Ethics Commission will not accept any complaints about candidates or campaigns within 60 days of an election. Local officials will also be required to send campaign and finance reports to the commission.

There will also be an increased notice period for Georgia insurance policy holders before termination, now 60 days instead of 30.
