ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A tense confrontation unfolded Friday night at an Orange County apartment complex, where a sheriff’s deputy shot a man after he allegedly fired at them, authorities reported.
The incident took place around 9:40 p.m. at the Buchanan Bay Apartments, where deputies were conducting surveillance on a homicide suspect, according to an official news release.
The deputies were aiming to execute a DNA search warrant related to a murder that reportedly took place earlier in the week. Details of that case remain sparse at this time.
As the suspect and another individual exited the apartment, the second man reportedly began shooting at the deputies, hitting an unmarked police vehicle. In response, a deputy fired back, injuring the man, who is described only as being in his 20s.
“Deputies were able to approach the individual, secure his weapon, and administer first aid until emergency medical services arrived,” Orange County Sheriff John Mina stated in a video message. “The man is currently in the hospital undergoing surgery.”
The original suspect tried to run back into the home, but the sheriff’s office said he was stopped, detained and questioned by detectives, adding he was also armed with a handgun.
The hospitalized man will face charges in the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting before its findings are turned over to the state attorney’s office, then to the sheriff’s office for internal review, the sheriff said.
Mina said body-worn camera video of the incident will be released within 30 days and that the deputy who fired his weapon is on paid, administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review.
