When a series is axed, especially one that seems to have untapped potential, it’s always disheartening. Consider Prime Video’s sci-fi Western, “Outer Range.” Despite boasting a stellar cast, including Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tom Pelphrey, and Lewis Pullman, the show saw its journey cut short after just two seasons, disappearing into the entertainment void.
The concept of emptiness is at the core of “Outer Range.” The story follows Royal Abbott (Brolin), who stumbles upon a mysterious black hole on his ranch. This enigmatic hole offers Royal visions of the future when he reaches into it. Complications abound with the Tillerson family disputing land rights with the Abbotts and the enigmatic Autumn (Poots) who seems inexplicably linked to the phenomenon. Without giving too much away, “Outer Range” entangles viewers in a complex web of plot twists, promising a narrative of limitless potential.
In 2022, this peculiar sci-fi Western emerged as one of Prime Video’s standout offerings, garnering an 88% approval from critics and a 77% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. So, what led to its cancellation? Prime Video remains silent on the matter, but speculation suggests the show’s high production costs, coupled with insufficient viewership, might be to blame. This serves as a reminder: to keep unique shows like “Outer Range” alive, audiences must tune in when they air.
At the time of “Outer Range’s” debut, Josh Brolin was riding a wave of career success. He had already left a mark as Cable in 2018’s “Deadpool” and as the formidable Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Not to mention, he was also cast in the “Dune” remake.
Josh Brolin also thought Outer Range’s cancelation was a mistake
Brolin himself equated “Outer Range” with some of his most acclaimed works, such as 2007’s “No Country for Old Men” and 2015’s “Sicario.” That’s high praise indeed, and perhaps the best reason for anyone to delve into this underrated gem of a sci-fi series.
Considering his pedigree and options on the table, the cancellation of “Outer Range” may have not even been a blip on his radar. However, Brolin didn’t mince his words when he discussed the decision, indicating how much this show had meant to him on both professional and personal levels. Posting on Instagram, he wrote, “As much of a faux pas as I feel that it is for Amazon Prime to cancel our beloved show ‘Outer Range,’ it will never minimize or detract from how great this idea, this diamond cast, and the hardest working crew I’ve ever encountered have been. As for creative integrity: 2-0.”
Further to this, Brolin listed “Outer Range” in the same category as 2007’s “No Country for Old Men” and 2015’s “Sicario” — two of his most celebrated films. That’s some mighty praise, and if that isn’t enough reason to convince anyone to check out this underrated but special sci-fi show, then what is?
