3 South Carolina cases reported in Salmonella outbreak linked to raw oysters

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A Salmonella outbreak linked to raw oysters has affected three individuals in South Carolina, as reported by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Altogether, 64 cases have emerged from this outbreak, prompting investigations by the CDC and FDA. Those affected have reported consuming raw oysters, and 20 of the cases have resulted in hospitalization.

People experiencing illness come from 22 different states, including South Carolina. Nearby states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Florida have also reported cases.

The CDC advises anyone exhibiting symptoms like diarrhea, a fever over 102 degrees, prolonged diarrhea, bloody stools, vomiting, and dehydration, to immediately seek medical attention.

Symptoms generally involve diarrhea, fever, and cramps, appearing anywhere between 6 hours and 6 days after ingestion. Most individuals tend to recover within four to seven days.
