A newsagency shopfront was smashed to pieces in Melbourne early this morning in an apparent ram raid.

In the early hours of the morning, a Hino truck reportedly stolen, was involved in a brazen attempt to breach a store on Smith Street in Collingwood. Around 5:30 a.m., the truck was driven in reverse into the storefront, aiming for the ATM at the entrance of the newsagency.

Despite the dramatic entry, the two individuals in the truck failed to access the ATM. They subsequently abandoned their efforts and made a hasty escape, heading east on Johnston Street in a Toyota Hilux.

Nearby, Scott Layton, who co-owns a pub, recounted the unusual sounds he heard, which drew his attention. Speaking to Today, Layton explained, “It sounded like, you know, a glass bin being thrown onto the road, so obviously I woke up.” He also noted hearing what seemed like an argument between two men before they fled the scene.
