Premier Chris Minns of New South Wales has firmly defended the presence of a “massive police presence” in the community, stating, “I don’t make any apology for that. We want people to be safe in our community.”
Speaking to the media, Minns emphasized the necessity of a significant law enforcement presence, as captured by photographer Dominic Giannini of AAP.
Details regarding the deployment of fully armed forces are expected to be disclosed soon. The NSW Police plan to provide further information in the coming days, Minns indicated.
The premier also highlighted the opportunity for the community to demonstrate resilience and solidarity in the face of recent events, particularly referencing the attack in Bondi earlier this month. The message was clear: the community should not be intimidated by such incidents.
However, a planned gathering at Bondi has been cancelled, with organisers instead focusing on “compassion and care for Sydney’s Jewish community and all those impacted”.
At midnight, Sydneysiders will ring in 2026 with shimmering fireworks from water, land and aerial platforms, six city rooftops, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.
