A Wisconsin man accused of fatally stabbing his 8-year-old sister and concealing her body in a storage bin is set to face trial.

Dayveon Lathrop, 21, was taken into custody in March 2024 following the tragic incident involving his adopted sister. As detailed in a criminal complaint accessed by WMTV, an NBC affiliate, the girl’s father reported her missing on March 9, 2024. Upon returning home from errands, he questioned Lathrop, who had been alone with the child. Disturbingly, Lathrop allegedly responded, “She is dead,” according to the police report.

Authorities later discovered the young girl had been stabbed, her body concealed inside a tote and hidden in the home’s laundry room.

When interrogated by police, Lathrop, who was 20 at the time, claimed he could not recall the events, citing intoxication and marijuana use. Witnesses recounted to police that they observed a heated exchange between Lathrop and the girl around 4:30 p.m. on the day she disappeared.

The criminal complaint reveals that officers found two knives in a shower before locating the girl’s body. Lathrop now faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide and concealing a corpse.

Questions about Lathrop’s competency were raised at his initial court hearing, but he was deemed competent at a hearing in May 2024. After he pleaded not guilty, a trial was scheduled for July 2025 but was continued, and another competency hearing was set. At Lathrop’s second competency hearing, he was deemed incompetent to stand trial, according to court records. The suspect was ordered to be committed to a mental health facility for treatment.

A third competency hearing took place on Monday. Lathrop was deemed competent, and a jury trial was scheduled for July 2026. He was sent back to Rock County Jail, where he remains in custody. His next court date is scheduled for May 8, 2026.
