From the mesmerizing portrayal of Vecna by Jamie Campbell Bower in Stranger Things to Bill Skarsgård‘s hauntingly captivating performance as Nosferatu, our screens are currently graced with an unexpected trend of alluring monsters.
Skarsgård has carved a niche for himself by portraying mysteriously charming yet terrifying characters, starting with his role as a bloodthirsty entity in Hemlock Grove. He further captivated audiences with his portrayal of Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the It series and now as the eerie Count Orlok in Nosferatu.
In a 2024 interview with Esquire, Skarsgård described his role as “gross” yet acknowledged its “very sexualized” nature, which he believes adds an “erotic” element for viewers. “It’s about exploring the sexual fetish of the monster’s power and its allure,” he explained.
Skarsgård elaborated, “The goal is for you to feel a mix of attraction and repulsion towards it simultaneously.”
On the small screen, Bower has left many of Us confused by whether we are more attracted to him as Mr. Whatsit or as the sadistic Vecna.
“I’m grateful … the whole effects team — we’re very grateful for the fact that you think [Vecna] is sexy,” Campbell joked in a 2022 Netflix featurette. “If you can’t have me at my Vecna then you don’t deserve me at my One.”
