Salmonella presents a risk to both humans and animals, leading to a range of serious health issues.

WASHINGTON — In a precautionary measure, a recall has been issued for dog treats in seven states due to potential salmonella contamination, which poses a risk of transmission to humans, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

On December 24, Consumers Supply Distributing LLC, based in Sioux City, Iowa, announced the recall in collaboration with the FDA.

This recall affects 4-pound packages of Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor, as well as 4-pound packages of Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken.

The affected products were distributed to retail outlets across Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana, and Nebraska.

Salmonella can affect both animals and people. Pets that eat contaminated food may become ill, and humans can be exposed through handling the products or touching surfaces that came into contact with them, especially if hands are not washed thoroughly.

In people, salmonella infection can cause symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

In rare cases, more serious complications such as infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms can occur. Consumers who experience symptoms after handling the recalled products should contact a health care provider.

Pets infected with salmonella may be lethargic and experience diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may show only decreased appetite, fever or abdominal pain.

Even pets without symptoms can carry the bacteria and spread it to other animals or people. Pet owners should contact a veterinarian if their dog has consumed the recalled products and shows signs of illness.

The recalled products can be identified by the following information:

  • Country Vet Biscuits – Original Meaty Flavor
    UPC: 899623000463
    Lot code: 40906513
    Size: 4-pound bag
    Best by date: 09/06/2026

  • Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits – Meaty Flavor with Chicken
    UPC: 840227340691
    Lot code: 40906513
    Size: 4-pound bag
    Best by date: 09/06/2026

The Country Vet Biscuits are marked with the lot number and expiration date on the front of the bag, while the Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits display that information on the back.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. The company said the issue was discovered through routine FDA sampling that detected the bacteria in finished products. Production and distribution of the affected lot have been halted as the FDA and the company investigate the cause.

Consumers who purchased the recalled dog biscuits should stop using them and return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions can be directed to Consumers Supply Distributing at (712) 202-5609, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST.
