British and Nigerian officials are extending their support to heavyweight boxing icon Anthony Joshua, who is currently recovering in a Lagos hospital after a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

Simon Field, the Deputy Head of Mission at the British High Commission, paid a visit to the 36-year-old boxing champion on Monday. His visit aimed to assess Joshua’s recovery progress and facilitate assistance for the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.

During his visit, Field engaged in high-level discussions with the governors of Ogun and Lagos states. Both governors have taken a personal interest in ensuring Joshua receives the best possible medical care.

“The British High Commission was formally notified of the accident. Officials from the Mission are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining contact with both the hospital and the Ogun State Government. Mr. Simon Field, the Deputy Head of Mission, made a hospital visit and met with Anthony Joshua and the two governors,” stated the Ogun State Government.

Governor Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) reportedly spent over seven hours at the hospital ensuring Joshua received top-tier treatment.

“As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital and was later joined by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We both took charge of the situation, oversaw Anthony Joshua’s care, and remained at the hospital for over seven hours.” — Governor Dapo Abiodun

The accident, which involved a Toyota Lexus SUV ramming into a stationary truck, tragically claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close associates and team members:

Sina Ghami (36): A British citizen and Joshua’s longtime strength and conditioning coach.

Ayodele Kelvin “Latif” Olu (36): A Nigerian-British citizen and personal trainer.

President Bola Tinubu was briefed on the tragedy and held separate telephone conversations with Joshua, his mother, and Governor Abiodun to offer his condolences and support.

“This immense tragedy has cast a deep shadow over this season. These are very difficult moments, and we must stand firm, united, and encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.” — President Bola Tinubu
