AUGUSTA, Ga. – Anticipation builds as the clock ticks down to one of the globe’s premier sporting spectacles, the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This summer, the spotlight will be firmly fixed on North America, as the United States, Canada, and Mexico come together to host this grand event.

For the United States, this marks a significant return to the spotlight, as it will be the first time in 32 years that the nation plays host to the FIFA World Cup. This edition, however, carries a unique twist, as it is a collaborative effort with neighboring Canada and Mexico, transforming the tournament into what many are lauding as a “Month-Long Festival of Futbol.”

The excitement is palpable among soccer enthusiasts and athletes across the continent. The prospect of witnessing the world’s best teams compete on familiar soil has fans and players alike buzzing with enthusiasm and anticipation.

This time around they’re joining Canada and Mexico to host what some call the “Month-Long Festival of Futbol”.

Soccer fans and players here say they couldn’t be more excited. 

“I think it’s going to be very interesting. I just like to watch soccer, I don’t care who wins. I just want to watch,” said Micah Paylor.

Global leaders including President Trump got together last month for the World Cup Draw to determine who, when, and where teams will play. 

The 2026 edition will be the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries.

It’s also the first time we’ll see a 48-team format, an increase from 32 teams in past tournaments. 

“I think it’s great. I think it shows how global soccer really is with more teams being able to qualify for the world cup and the big stage. For people who aren’t as fortunate as we are, there’s more hope and passion for the smaller countries,” said Jeremiah Sturkey.

Others say having more teams could make the tournament even more competitive.

“I think it gives opportunities for underdog stories. A bunch of the crazy teams that had no chance of qualifying? This gives them a chance to make a story and making headlines,” said Adrian Casas.

16 cities across the 3 countries are set to host games this summer—that includes Atlanta,, which will host 8 games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. 

According to the Atlanta Metro Chamber, the World Cup is expected to have a $503-million-dollar impact on the local and state economy.

“Right now, this is the closest place we have to go play, and it’s 20 minutes away from my house. So, maybe we can get some more fields. I know for some other friends it’s 30 minutes away,” Casas said.

Other players say they’re most excited to see the world come together to enjoy a unifying sport. 

“My friends over there I met two years ago, and we’re super close now. It’s just crazy how soccer unites us and brings us together,” said Ethan Johnson.

The World Cup kicks off on June 11th at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The first game in Atlanta features the 2010 World Cup Champions Spain on June 15th.
