Authorities in the greater Atlanta region have detained a 15-year-old in connection with the fatal shooting of an Uber driver, whose body was discovered on a street in Lawrenceville on Thursday.
According to a statement from the Lawrenceville Police Department, officers responded shortly after 5 a.m. to reports of an individual lying in the street. Upon arrival, they discovered a 58-year-old man who had been fatally shot. Surveillance footage from a Ring doorbell camera revealed a black SUV stopping on the road, dropping off the victim, and then departing.
Investigations revealed that the SUV, owned by the deceased, had been hijacked during the incident. Law enforcement officials quickly traced the vehicle to a residence in Lilburn, approximately 10 miles from the crime scene, where they apprehended the teenager. The suspect is being charged as an adult with murder.
The authorities have withheld the victim’s identity pending notification of family members, and due to the suspect’s age, his name has not been disclosed.
The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Police have also not released the killer’s name due to his age.
