Increase in Flu-Related Hospitalizations Observed in South Carolina

SAVANNAH, Ga. — As 2026 unfolds, both Georgia and South Carolina face a surge in flu cases.

Recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that the final weeks of 2025 saw a sharp increase in flu-like illnesses across these states, pushing them into the “very high” category for activity levels.

A South Carolina hospital underscores the flu season’s severity with a plea: “Protect those around you.”

During the 52nd week of the 2025 flu season, spanning December 21 to December 27, South Carolina reported 735 hospitalizations. The most affected demographics were seniors and adults over the age of 50, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Health’s weekly surveillance data.

This flu season has resulted in 16 flu-related deaths in South Carolina, a stark contrast to 2024 when no fatalities were reported.
