A 19-year-old man, reportedly carrying a weapon, has triggered a significant police response, leading authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for the safety of those near Lake City.
COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — A manhunt is underway for an armed individual, resulting in a substantial law enforcement presence in the vicinity of Southwest Journey Court and CR-242.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office communicated via social media that they implemented a shelter-in-place directive shortly after 5 p.m. for the community’s protection.
“The individual is described as a 19-year-old Black male, dressed in shorts and a dark shirt,” deputies reported. “He is believed to be armed with a handgun equipped with an extended magazine.”
In an update to First Coast News, deputies confirmed the search remains ongoing. They are coordinating with Columbia County Emergency Services to potentially expand the shelter-in-place alert to encompass a wider area.
“People in the immediate area have been notified by law enforcement in that area,” a deputy told First Coast News,” adding that they will notify the public once the shelter-in-place is lifted once the person they are looking for is apprehended.
Authorities say that if you see the man, you should not engage with him and instead call 911.
