(NEXSTAR) – In 2025, a new electronic system allowed nearly 300,000 Americans to file their taxes directly with the IRS at no cost. However, this option will no longer be available in 2026.
Launched as a pilot program in 2024, IRS Direct File provided a way for Americans to submit their tax returns online directly to the Internal Revenue Service for free. The Biden administration had announced plans to make the program permanent, with an expansion to 25 states by 2025.
Advocates of the program praised it for simplifying the tax filing process, making it quicker and more affordable. Nonetheless, it faced pushback from Republican lawmakers who labeled it a misuse of taxpayer money since other free filing programs already exist, albeit with cumbersome processes. Additionally, commercial tax preparation companies were not pleased with IRS Direct File, as it threatened their lucrative business of charging for tax software.
