Renowned for her role on Strictly Come Dancing, Dr. Punam Krishnan recently disclosed her ongoing struggle with breast cancer, sharing the challenging news via Instagram. The doctor and television personality revealed that she received the life-altering diagnosis five months prior, a revelation that has plunged her into some profoundly difficult emotional depths.
Dr. Krishnan, who participated in the star-packed BBC series in 2024, spoke candidly about her fear since learning about her condition, emphasizing her commitment to taking each day as it comes. Accompanying a selfie captured from her hospital bed, she wrote a poignant message: “Here goes … Five months ago, I heard the words nobody ever wants to hear: You have cancer.
“I still find it hard to write that sentence. But it’s my reality and my truth.”
Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Krishnan shared, “After nearly twenty years as a doctor, helping patients and families navigate difficult diagnoses, being on the receiving end of such news was an entirely different experience. The shock, fear, and trauma are overwhelming. In those moments, all my medical knowledge seemed insignificant.”
She further revealed her diagnosis of breast cancer, marking a significant and personal chapter in her life.
“Since then, I’ve taken things one day at a time because that’s all I could do. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be cared for by the most extraordinary NHS team, from my GP through to my breast and oncology teams. And still … it’s been really hard. Much harder than I ever imagined.
“I’ve kept this private while going through treatment, trying to protect my energy and most of all – my children.”
“My husband, my family and a small circle of friends have carried me through in ways I’ll never forget. When something like this happens, you realise very quickly what – and who – truly matters,” she concluded.
Dr Krishnan was inundated with support from fans and her celebrity pals, as one commented: “I’m so sorry you have had so much to deal with, and your lovely family too.
“One day at a time is all we have to focus on. Heal slowly and completely, and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Sending you so much support and love.”
Another penned: “I’m so, so sorry you’re going through this. How utterly terrifying. I’m so glad you’ve had love and support.”
A third commented: “What a brave thing to share, glad you are on the path to recovery, take time to self-care.”
Strictly pro and breast cancer survivor Amy Dowden added: “You got this, pink sister. Sending so much love.”
Strictly’s It Takes Two host Fleur East said: “Thank you so much for sharing and raising awareness about early detection. Sending you lots of love.”
As Dr Krishnan’s Strictly partner, Gorka Marquez, added: “I know you, and I know you will get through this. And we will be sat having a coffee and a croissant.”
