Authorities have released further information regarding a Pennsylvania man accused of shooting a firefighter dining with the man’s estranged spouse.

Robert D. Naugle Jr., aged 30, faces charges of criminal homicide following allegations that he entered his former partner’s residence on December 31, 2025, and shot 47-year-old James Thomas. The estranged wife of Naugle informed police that the couple had initiated divorce proceedings in November 2025, with Naugle leaving their shared home two days before the incident. According to earlier reports by Law&Crime, Naugle had initially planned to celebrate New Year’s Eve with his ex, but those arrangements were canceled.

Despite the change in plans, Naugle visited his previous home and, upon discovering Thomas dining with his estranged wife, allegedly discharged 10 rounds, resulting in Thomas’s death. Naugle subsequently contacted 911, purportedly stating, “I walked in on my wife with another man, and I killed him.”

During a press briefing covered by NBC affiliate WPXI, Pennsylvania State Trooper Steve Limani shared further insights into the incident. Limani disclosed that Naugle’s four children were present in the house, including an infant located in the same room where Thomas was fatally shot. The other three children were reportedly asleep in upstairs bedrooms.

Limani described Thomas, who Naugle’s estranged wife considered a friend, as “just sitting there eating food” when Naugle entered, bypassed his infant child, and allegedly shot Thomas without uttering a word.

WPXI reported that Thomas was a volunteer firefighter who left behind a 12-year-old son.

“In one fell swoop, Mr. Naugle makes it so there [are] two families now… one doesn’t have a father, and the other is going to be locked up in the Westmoreland County Jail,” Limani said.

Naugle was charged with criminal homicide and is currently in custody at the Westmoreland County Jail, where he is being held without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 14.
