In a tragic incident in Indiana, a woman tasked her son with collecting rent from his elder brother, only for the situation to escalate into a deadly confrontation. The older brother ended up fatally stabbing the younger sibling during a dispute over the money.
The mother revealed to investigators that her son, Thomas Campbell, 59, has a history of being reluctant to pay rent, according to a report by WGN.
The Gary Police Department disclosed that the altercation involved Thomas and his 53-year-old brother, Erik Campbell. During the fight, Thomas allegedly drew a knife and inflicted multiple stab wounds on Erik. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, Erik succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. He suffered stab wounds to his neck, chest, arm, back, and stomach.
Witnesses stated that Thomas initially left the scene, only to return with his hand concealed in his pocket. Surveillance footage captured Erik imploring Thomas to reveal what he was hiding.
In statements to the police, Thomas claimed that Erik had punched him, leading him to “black out,” as reported by WGN. He further alleged that Erik had a history of bullying him, according to court records.
Thomas Campbell called 911, telling dispatchers that he stabbed his brother after he threatened him, the Tribune said. Witnesses said Erik Campbell did not have a gun, however, and no gun was found on the scene.
Thomas Campbell has been charged with murder and is being held without bail, according to WGN.
